Sant Pere de Rhodes - holiday visit

The monastery of Sant Pere de Rhodes is situated on the slopes of the Verdera Mountain high above the Port de Selva and the bay of Llançà, 500m. below on the Mediterranean coast. This is Catalonia’s most important Romanesque style building.

The church was consecrated in the year 1022 though elements of its construction, such as the ornate supporting pillars, have been taken from previous roman buildings. It is believed that the site is one upon which earlier churches had been constructed.

The well preserved ruins are accessible from an excellent road; which passes a picnic area shortly before reaching the monastery. The picnic area offers splendid views over the Bay of Roses and the Cap Creus natural park. Barbeque facilities are provided for public use within the picnic area. There are several well posted walks from this location.
