The mediaeval town of Besalú controlled the area known as the Garrotxa as well as the
lands around Corbières (Aude) which is today part of France. One of the Counts of Besalú Wilfred the Hairy is credited with the unification of the 'Catalan lands'.
The town is well preserved and draws tourists from both sides of the Spanish French border, and is well worth a visit.
