Aiguamolls de l'Empordà is a wetlands natural park situated where the river Murga reaches the Mediterranean Sea . The Catalan word Aiguamolls means windmills the natural park preserves an important habitat for many bird species.
Rice was a widely grown crop in the mud flats and lagoons which defined the Empordiàn marsh lands. The marsh land was drained to facilitate cereal and fruit production; and the construction of the canals which today form the modern tourist resort of Empuriabrava.
