Aiguamolls de l'Empordà - wetlands nature reserve

Aiguamolls de l'Empordà is a wetlands natural park situated where the river Murga reaches the Mediterranean Sea. The Catalan word Aiguamolls means windmills the natural park preserves an important habitat for many bird species.

Rice was a widely grown crop in the mud flats and lagoons which defined the Empordiàn marsh lands. The marsh land was drained to facilitate cereal and fruit production; and the construction of the canals which today form the modern tourist resort of Empuriabrava
